re-edit: After bawling for ten minutes straight, I have to say – the short story that touched my heart completely was the old couple played by Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman. They reminded of my grandparents. I guess, it ties in perfectly with this theme of New York. My grandpa passed away the night I flew into New York City. I couldn’t even attend the funeral because it was in the Philippines and I just had started my internship. Suffice to say, it was probably one of the most saddest moments in my life. One of the most important men in my life had passed.
Their story was sweet. Simple. Like most elderly couples. She nagged, he let her. The way Leachman and Wallach argued reminds me so much of them. While he was sick, my grandma was absolutely certain she couldn’t sleep anywhere else except next to him. In the hospitals, at home, anywhere. They were married for over 20 years and she was forever jealous of any female that was near him. It was cute and ridiculous. Let’s be clear, not ridiculously cute. It was a subtle love but remained strong till the very end. No ifs, ands or buts. Those are the stories I believe are worth sharing.
