Re:edit of Day 11: New York, I Love You.

re-edit: After bawling for ten minutes straight, I have to say – the short story that touched my heart completely was the old couple played by Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman.  They reminded of my grandparents. I guess, it ties in perfectly with this theme of New York. My grandpa passed away the night I flew into New York City. I couldn’t even attend the funeral because it was in the Philippines and I just had started my internship. Suffice to say, it was probably one of the most saddest moments in my life. One of the most important men in my life had passed.

Their story was sweet. Simple. Like most elderly couples. She nagged, he let her. The way Leachman and Wallach argued reminds me so much of them. While he was sick, my grandma was absolutely certain she couldn’t sleep anywhere else except next to him. In the hospitals, at home, anywhere. They were married for over 20 years and she was forever jealous of any female that was near him. It was cute and ridiculous. Let’s be clear, not ridiculously cute. It was a subtle love but remained strong till the very end. No ifs, ands or buts. Those are the stories I believe are worth sharing.

New York, I Love You is like the better version of the stupid mash up rom-coms that Gerry Marshall has been sadly producing. With a better ensemble in some short stories, the film follows different couples throughout New York. My  favorite short story had to be Anton Yelchin and Olivia Thirlby. My prom wasn’t even going down like that.

After living in New York for a couple of months, I must say this film made me miss it just a bit. Who would’ve thought the stench of garbage would be thoroughly missed. I will say though, New York does leave one hell of an impression on you. The lights, the darks, the bars, the people, everything. For as much as I am a California girl, there’s something daunting and enticing about the City That Never Sleeps. You meet so many people in the most crazy and unexpected places, coming from all walks of life. Of course, you all knew that. But just in retrospect, it just seems sooo ridiculous.  Continue reading
